"It always starts with a pulse. Not quite a feeling, but more than intuition. Those who have had the experience liken it to the first beating of a heart. However, the second pulse is what's needed to start the fire. Most people feel the first, then spend the rest of the days never nurturing its touch again. The loss of that feeling, the snuffing out of potential, bring some to despair and others to madness.

Entire religions have been birthed and died a fiery death in the vain attempt to kindle that pulse once more. Some have called it the "Touch of the Divine." Human sacrifices, repressive societies, and continent-spanning civil wars have occurred just to feel that pulse through their veins again. Of course, it's all mostly hogwash. My studies and calculations show that the Second Pulse is random; that someone is gifted powers that elevate them to just below the Gods by mere chance. This can only mean two things. Firstly, we have likely killed someone who has the power to invert existence before they even knew of their gift. Secondly, chance can be manipulated.

For reasons too complicated to explain in these pages (although I've made a valiant effort in previous journals), I've been able to show that those who have never felt the first pulse at all can have offspring that show signs of the Second Pulse well before others. As anyone knows, the earlier the Second manifests, the stronger those tendencies towards the arcane are. Pushing these students early, often, and relentlessly adds additional fuel to their fire. Nurturing that spark produces arcane manifestations on levels only I've been able to produce. The experiments will continue."
